Canadian Funding Corp Reviews CMHC Affordable Housing Reports

The Government of Canada announced today that 62 housing co-­operatives and non-profit organizations located in the greater Montréal area will receive more than $5.8 million through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, as part of the social housing renovation and retrofit investments.

The announcement was made in Montréal, at Maison Jean-Brillant, by Senator Claude Carignan, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), in the company of Richard McConomy, Chair of the Board of Directors, Maison Bieler inc.

“Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government is taking action to help ensure our economic recovery and create the conditions for long-term growth,” said Senator Claude Carignan. “Funding renovation and retrofit projects, like these ones, will not only improve the quality of life of the residents by keeping their homes safe and affordable but also help stimulate the economy and create jobs.”

The Government of Canada, through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, announced $1 billion for social housing renovation and retrofit. Of the $1 billion, $850 million is being delivered by Provinces and Territories on a cost-matched basis for existing federally assisted social housing projects that they administer on behalf of the partnership. The remaining $150 million is being delivered by CMHC for existing federally assisted off-reserve housing that it directly administers. Repairs that are eligible for funding include general improvements, energy-efficiency upgrades or conversions, and modifications in support of persons with disabilities.

As of February 1, 2010, CMHC is accepting applications from eligible project sponsors for the remaining $75 million funding for Phase II of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Sponsor groups can apply online or through the mail. Eligible repairs include general improvements, energy-efficiency upgrades or conversions, and modifications in support of persons with disabilities.

The housing co-operatives that will receive contributions from the Government of Canada being announced today are listed in the attached backgrounder.

“The financial contribution of $259,893 provided under the federal renovation and retrofit initiative administered by CMHC will benefit the residents of Maison Jean-Brillant,” said Richard McConomy, Chair of the Board of Directors, Maison Bieler inc. “In fact, these funds will serve to renovate the elevator systems to ensure the safety of the residents. We are very pleased to have received this funding, which will help improve the quality of life and safety of our residents.”

Canadian Funding Corp on CMHC Affordable Housing – Funding of $2. 4 million for 20 new affordable housing rental -units for seniors living on low income was announced today in Quinte West (Trenton Ward).

Rick Norlock, Member of Parliament for Northumberland – Quinte West, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Lou Rinaldi, Member of Provincial Parliament for Northumberland – Quinte West and Parliamentary Assistant to the Honourable Jim Watson, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, along with Ron Emond, Warden, County of Hastings and John Williams, Mayor, Quinte West, made the announcement.

“The Government of Canada is helping Canadians during these tough economic times and giving hope to seniors who need quality, affordable housing that meets their needs,” said MP Norlock. “This investment is possible through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government’s plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession. For Ontario, this includes a $1.2 billion joint investment.”

“New housing initiatives add significant support to the McGuinty government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy,” said MPP Rinaldi. “We will continue to work with our municipal partners to ensure more units are built during the life of this program.”

“Quinte West looks forward to the 20 new affordable rental units,” said Mayor Williams. “This will allow seniors living on fixed incomes, to live here in the City, closer to family and friends.”

The Government of Canada wants to ensure that Canadians on fixed incomes can live with independence and dignity and remain in their communities, close to family and friends. Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides $400 million, over two years, to build new rental housing for low-income seniors. Overall, the Economic Action Plan includes $2 billion for new and existing social housing, plus up to $2 billion in loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on the Government of Canada’s commitment in 2008 of more than $1.9 billion, over the next five years, to improve and build new affordable housing and help the homeless.

Today’s announcement celebrated the funding for 20 new affordable rental units at Riverview Residence, 135/137 Ontario Street in Trenton. The project is sponsored by the County of Hastings.

Ontario is moving quickly to implement this additional funding. The province has already approved more than $172 million for construction-ready projects, which will improve access to affordable housing for low-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities across the province. The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Dennis Fentie, Premier of Yukon, made the announcement.

“The Government of Canada is committed to making affordable housing available in Yukon and across Canada for those who need it most,” said Minister Toews. “Today’s launch provides Watson Lake seniors with quality and affordable rental housing that meets their needs.”

“Yukon is capitalizing on Canada’s economic stimulus package, to the benefit of residents, industry and communities. We are the first jurisdiction to fully allocate this year’s funding received under Canada’s Economic Action Plan,” said Premier Fentie. “We’re very pleased with the partnership established with the Government of Canada, with construction already underway throughout the territory.”

For this new seniors project, the Government of Canada is contributing more than $4 million for 12 affordable housing units and Yukon Housing Corporation is providing $450,000. The project will meet Yukon Housing Corporation’s SuperGreen Home energy standards and features Accommodating Home standards to ensure a barrier-free interior and exterior living environment. The project will enable seniors in Watson Lake to remain in their community.

Last fall, the Government of Canada committed more than $1.9 billion over the next five years to improve and build new affordable housing and to help the homeless. Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion over two years in new and existing social housing and lending of up to another $2 billion to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.
